A TAPESTRY OF DIFFERENT POETIC PERFORMANCES
Karmic Nuyorican
Vilma performs her poem for the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Walking the streets of the Lower East Side of Avenue B and 6th Street she rhymes to the rhythm of her heartbeat.
In search of her biological father, this poem paints the portrait of a daughter writing to show how Karma comes back around.
The intergenerational seeds of rejection blossom into a future of self agency and self discovery. It tells how she found her paternal siblings and how a love child became legitimate in the eyes of her seminal siblings.

In this poem, Vilma personifies the power of REGRET. As a declaration, shel takes back her power as a woman, writer, author, and advocate.
She was grateful to perform with such a strong community of scholars, artists, writers, and an encouraging network of fellow poets.
Poem: Yo Soy de Aqui y No de Alla

As a rematriated author that has moved to Puerto Rico, it was a true rite of passage for Dr. Caban to recite her poem at this Puerto Rican cultural landmark. The Poets Passage is located in Puerto Rico’s Capital city of San Juan. The poem Vilma shared was a proclamation of belonging. She shared difficult moments in her journey as a Nuyorican trying to fit in her new archipelago home.
Afterwards, she celebrated with two wonderful poets and writers who performed on the same stage! Ray and Indio are originally from New York City. They gave Vilma an encouraging gift. It was a beautiful art piece dedicated to the future writers of “Casa de Maria Publisher”. The gift was commissioned by screenwriter Ray Anthony Cadiz and it was designed and carved out by the artist Indio Melendez. Indio has moved to Puerto Rico to make a new life there! Vilma is finding her community of writers.
