Puerto Rico weeks before Hurricane Maria.
Driving to La Casa de Maria in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico.

DOCUMENTARY SUMMARY: This documentary chronicles a Nuyorican daughter’s journey as she “rematriates” to her mother’s motherland of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. Vilma Luz is the daughter of a battered woman. When her mom was dying of cancer, Vilma made a final promise to Maria that she would help her fix the home that her beloved mother secretly built in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. It was supposed to be her mother’s island refuge from her New York City abuser. This documentary shares her journey as a daughter doing all she can to make that final promise a reality. Hurricane Maria and a global pandemic couldn’t stop this tenacious daughter.

The images of Puerto Rico in this documentary bring on such nostalgia for the island. As the executive producer of this project, Dr. Caban is proud that she broke through the struggles to make this documentary a reality. In July 2024, Vilma retired from teaching. Currently, she is fixing La Casa de Maria to create a publishing house in the town of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico.
